Forktail Rainbowfish, scientifically known as Pseudomugil furcatus, originate from the rainforests of Papua New Guinea. They boast vibrant colors, including glowing blue eyes and distinctive yellow fins, with a fork pattern on their tails resembling pom-poms. To set up an ideal environment for Forktail Rainbowfish, a 20-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended, with temperatures ranging from 75–80°F (24–27°C) and slightly alkaline pH above 7.0. They thrive in a habitat with live plants and require a secure lid to prevent jumping. As schooling fish, they prefer being in groups, so starting with at least three pairs (or two males and four females) is advisable. They coexist peacefully with other community fish like corydoras, tetras, and rasboras, but may outcompete slower fish during feeding. Their diet consists of various small foods like frozen daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp, pellets, and flakes. They are relatively easy to breed, requiring both sexes, optimal conditioning, and a suitable spawning site like a spawning mop or floating plant. Eggs are typically moved to a separate container for hatching, and fry are fed infusoria, vinegar eels, and powdered fry foods, transitioning to live baby brine shrimp as they grow.
